Week 6 – The Role of Universities in Sustainable Development
Week 6 – The Role of Universities in Sustainable Development
This week, we learned about the important roles that universities play in promoting sustainable development. It reminded me that higher education is not just about gaining knowledge for personal success, but also about building a better future for society and the planet.
🏫 Universities as Agents of Change
We began by understanding how universities are not only places for academic learning but also centres for ethical, spiritual, and societal development. According to Prof. Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas, education in Islam should be holistic - it should build the mind, soul, and character of a person. This means universities have the duty to:
Teach sustainability with moral purpose
Integrate both Islamic and scientific knowledge
Promote a sense of responsibility (Khalifah)
Produce balanced individuals who serve humanity
Sustainable development is not just a subject to learn—it is a way of thinking and living that should be practiced through every level of education.
📚 Holistic Education: Beyond Grades and Exams
We also discussed ideas from Harry R. Lewis’ book “Excellence Without a Soul”, which highlights how modern universities sometimes focus too much on grades, rankings, and competition. But real education must:
Teach global awareness
Build civic responsibility and ethical leadership
Prepare students to be emotionally intelligent, spiritually grounded, and socially active
In other words, universities must help students grow into well-rounded human beings who can lead sustainable change in the real world.
🌍 How Can Universities Contribute to Sustainability?
There are several ways universities can help achieve sustainable development:
1. Teaching & Learning (Nurturing the Soul)
Integrate sustainability into all subjects
Encourage students to think about long-term effects
Promote values like justice, empathy, and stewardship
2. Research & Innovation (From the Soul, For the Soul)
Conduct research that solves real-world problems
Focus on local solutions that are accessible, affordable, and ethical
Avoid over-specialisation that disconnects knowledge from society
3. Community Engagement (Celebrating the Soul)
Partner with NGOs, government, and communities
Empower local people with education and solutions
Promote sustainable practices through outreach and service
💡 Post-COVID and Future Thinking
After COVID-19, universities have an even greater role to play in:
Supporting resilient communities
Addressing inequality and environmental harm
Using technology and innovation to make education and development more inclusive
We also learned about the “Blue Ocean Strategy”, which encourages us to stop copying others and start solving real local problems. This includes focusing on the needs of the “bottom billion”—the poorest populations that often suffer the most from environmental and economic issues.
🧠 Education with Soul: The Sejahtera Approach
Education must go beyond just skills and knowledge. It must include:
Aqal (intellect)
Iman (faith)
Jiwa (soul)
Harta (wealth)
Keturunan (lineage)
This is the Sejahtera model in education—forming students who are balanced, ethical, and prepared to contribute meaningfully to society.
✨ Final Reflection
This week helped me realise that my university journey is not just about getting a degree—it’s about becoming a person of value to the world. I am being shaped not just as a student, but as a future leader, a steward of the Earth, and a contributor to a more just and sustainable future.
Universities must lead with purpose, and students must learn with the intention to serve.
